Death Is Coming
These Italian lads have been around for a while now, and this is their latest full-length. The band are involved in a split with The Meads Of Asphodel from right here in the U.K., which places them in the same position as the mighty (or not so mighty anymore) Mayhem.
But anyway, back to this release. The bass on this record is prominent, giving the musc a dark driving force that is missing on so many black metal albums. This in combination with the furious drumming gives the music a powerful facade. Underneath this lies a darkly melodic guitar that creates some cold atmosphere. Images of hoplessness, despair and emptiness prevail, especially on the suitably titled 'World In Ruin'. The cascading guitars create a loomig air of destruction.
One element of Frostmoon Eclipse that is what separates them from most is that they intertwine shere bruatlity with evil melody, sometimes consturcted with acoustic guitar inerludes, breakdowns and low tempo sections. These passages haunt the music and power its dark themes. Most of the songs are introduced with an acoustic or more melodic requiem, then rapes your senses as the full-on black metal attack begins, and attack is an accurate description as the misanthropy is strong, especially in peices like 'Waiting For The Storm'.
The acoustic track 'Funeral' could be Opeth it's that damned good! In black metal songs, there is often a slower, melodic but fucking evil breakdown and then a build-up before the brutal song regains its pace, Immortal's Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) is the first example that comes to mind. Well the track 'Blindness' is this section without the rest of the song.
This comes highly recommended to any fans of black metal.
